“Indigenous”, “Indigents” and “Exiles”: Circulations of “Africans” and the Production of Indigeneity in Cape Verde

What is it about?

Was indigeneity really an exogenous reality in Cape Verde? In this article, that is the question that guides my thinking. To answer it, I searched archives in Praia and Lisbon for documents showing how the colonial government dealt with the influx of Cape Verdeans and other Africans. From this, I observe how the categories used to produce forced labour produced the indigenity in the archipelago.
