What is it about?
The essay is about how disciplines are constructed. It investigates the role of social and political interests on the making of disciplines, and scientific work in general. In the essay, these questions are particularly focused on the study of religion and the study of theology.

Why is it important?
The article argues that one should pay attention to the way in which scholarly discourses are manufactured, which is to see them as historical, contextual, and ideological artifacts. Looking at disciplines this way, it is possible to stand outside the insider-outsider binaries. This has significant bearing on how we conceive of disciplinary work in terms of multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinarity.
Perspectives
This essay is the culmination of a long involvement with the sociology of science with respect to the study of religion and theology. I aimed at explaining the aims and focus of the journal, Religion & Theology.
