What is it about?

The term deterrence is used as a shorthand for a number of different ways to prevent violence. The International Criminal Court likely has a general deterrent effect on atrocity crimes, but less of an ability to end wars.

The ICC is embattled today, and often challenged for not preventing violence. This article shows that it has in fact made a deterrent contribution, however modest.

Perspectives

When it comes to preventing violence and atrocity, the ICC is so far more useful for what it is than what it does.
