What is it about?

This study investigates the socio-economic impacts of gender-based violence on women in Hawassa city, Sidama Regional State, Ethiopia. Using a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative and qualitative research within a survey design, the study selected six Kebeles through purposive and random sampling. Out of 584 populations, 311 participants were randomly chosen, revealing a positive correlation between gender-based violence and its socio-economic consequences on women. The research emphasizes the persistent challenge of gender-based violence in the area, with enforcement gaps in legal frameworks due to societal norms and weak local structures. The study underscores the need for interventions addressing the root causes of gender-based violence, particularly focusing on the prevalent issues of sexual violence, the lack of targeted programs, and the importance of addressing women's education, awareness of sexual and reproductive health, and poverty levels for effective efforts in combating gender-based violence.
