What is it about?

Honour-related violence is recognised as a human rights problem in a number of countries. Each State has its own approach to addressing it. This article argues that there are certain minimum measures that all States in which honour-related violence exists must take. It provides examples of such violence and suggests the appropriate preventive measures.

The scope of State obligations to prevent honour-related violence remains largely unexplored, with the exception of so-called honour killings. This article analyses other forms of honour-related violence from the perspective of the right to private life.
