What is it about?

This study used geometric morphometrics to examine cranial shape variation in kangaroo mice (Microdipodops). I analyzed 75 cranial landmarks from 141 adult specimens representing two species and seven subspecies from 39 localities, testing how well skull shape distinguishes taxa and how much variation is associated with allometry and ecology.

Why is it important?

Cranial shape distinguished the two species and most subspecies more effectively than cranial size alone. Allometry was important, but climatic and ecological differences also contributed to shape variation. The results also identify morphologically distinctive lineages that may have taxonomic and conservation significance.

Perspectives

I was particularly interested in whether cranial shape could provide useful taxonomic information while also revealing ecological adaptation. Microdipodops is well suited to this because the genus contains both an ecological specialist and a more variable generalist distributed across contrasting environments.
