What is it about?
Can the field of the study of religion be compared to a ship that is not only rudderless but also sinking? This is what philosopher and ethicist of religion Richard B. Miller seems to think in his recent book Why Study Religion? There, he argues that unless the practitioners of ‘the craft’ of studying religion turn to a value-based study of religion, they will render themselves even more irrelevant than they already are today. This article scrutinizes Miller’s arguments, concluding that such a normative turn would undo many of the achievements of what is actually a vibrant field of study.
