What is it about?

I contrast ecosocialist with capitalist approaches across representative sectors of the economy, focusing especially on transport, food, and communications. I explain how notions of efficiency vary depending on the economic framework. I argue that technological choices should be based not on the profit criterion but rather on potential impact both on humans and on the natural environment. The latter should be discussed and monitored by organizations reflecting full democratic input.

Why is it important?

The destruction of the ecosphere is accelerating. It therefore becomes all the more urgent to cut back on wasteful expenditures of energy and to find ways of restoring biodiversity. The necessary changes will require universal participation. One condition for effective participation is that people be broadly familiar with technological issues.
