What is it about?

Human-Animal Studies often look at relationships by comparing humans and animals and then drawing conclusions. These conclusions focus, however, on how each member in the relationship shapes the other. This special issue takes a different approach. It sees the relationships as such between humans and animals as something shared and active, helping shape who we are as individuals and groups. The introduction suggests using the idea of "modes" to better understand how these relationships work and how to study them. The articles in this issue look at human-animal interactions to show how these relationships are formed, lived, and sometimes made more complex. Instead of just comparing, this issue focuses on how people and animals are connected with each other. It offers an improved way to study these bonds, while still respecting the differences and independence of both humans and animals.
