What is it about?

The spirit of the Coptic faith and culture now resonates across continents, and it is in the arts where creative expression enriches not only the Coptic communities in the diaspora but non-Coptic communities as well. Today’s global Coptic culture is actively engaged in developing a creative platform for intercultural exchange and collaboration whereby cultural traditions, new growth patterns, and outreach can generate innovative structures and initiatives to promote progress and continuity for generations to come. This chapter explores the expansive surge in the preservation and promotion of Coptic heritage in the areas of music, art, architecture, and literature.

Why is it important?

This chapter represents contemporary research into various aspects of Coptic culture in the diaspora, and particularly in North America. It highlights the people who are engaging in Coptic heritage and the different spheres in which their work is now being appreciated not only by the Copts but outside the Coptic community.

Perspectives

We were honored to add this research to a festschrift in honor of Hany N. Takla, a Coptic Studies scholar who is himself a son of the Coptic diaspora, and one who has contributed tireless work over many years. Because of Hany Takla's efforts and example, Coptic Studies is growing and continues to be known worldwide and not just in Egypt or in Los Angeles.
