What is it about?
The Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) was an important forum for bridging the divides of the Cold War. This chapter examines the coverage of two daily newspapers on the human dimension of the third CSCE follow-up meeting in Vienna (1986–1989). It focuses on the question of what information and what image of the conference was conveyed to the public.

Why is it important?
In the run-up to the follow-up meeting, many delegations recognized how important it was to inform the public about the negotiations. This was intended to reduce skepticism and generate interest in the negotiations and their results. Newspaper reports were an important medium to achieve this goal. Even though the newspapers examined reported regularly on the follow-up meeting, this objetctive could only be reached to a limited extent.
