Chapter 6 explores the early reception of the NT by considering evidence of a scriptural reception of NT writings that is associated with the concept of covenant. The chapter opens with several justifications for focusing on the pre-Irenaeus evidence, including the general agreement that the phrase “New Testament” was well established as a title of a collection of writings near the end of the second century. After discussing problems and procedures for examining second-century Christianity, the Apostolic Fathers and Justin Martyr are examined.
