What is it about?
In brief, the chapter looks at how a young mother, wife and early career (Coloured, woman) academic navigates, negotiates and straddles between the demands of her home and work life in pursuit of equal excellence in her professional and personal lives within patriarchal domains.

Why is it important?
This chapter is useful to other female early career academics who may resonate with the author's journey. It is also useful for those in management to consider the challenges young Coloured females face when wanting to compete in a historically White male-dominated context that, even though now more inclusive of Black women, remains a place where Coloured women remain underrepresented and scarcely understood.
Perspectives
It is important for the voices (racial and social struggles, challenges, but also triumphs) of Coloured women - residing in similar social contexts, trying to break free of the poverty trap through and pursuing a formal education journey and career in academics - to be heard.
