What is it about?

Technology and design education (TDE) needs to evolve with the times. Complex issues and challenges require interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches. These have been the key to many breakthroughs in the sciences, humanities, engineering, medicine, and other arenas of human investigation of the cosmos. Following a recent publication representing all federal agencies in the USA, we advocate that TDE teachers and their administrators advocate for and implement more interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary content into their programs. This is in keeping with the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary orientation of Professor Marc de Vries across his professional career and to whom this volume of essays on the future of TDE is honoring.

Why is it important?

Major issues at the intersection of science, technology, and society require problem solving approaches that draw from a variety of disciplines and techniques. Many contemporary challenges force us as human beings to also create new tools and reconceptualize the nature of the problem we are trying to address. It is vital that our educational systems reflect the complexities of the world around us and solving real-world problems and confronting real-world issues is paramount.

Perspectives

As two scholars from China and the USA with extensive professional and life experiences, we are convinced by our personal trajectories that interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity must become normal within both K-12 and higher education settings. Students need to grapple with real-world issues and problems and learn how to draw upon many disciplines to tackle these problems and issues in appropriate ways. This has ramifications for our teacher preparation programs as well as for programming within schools.
