Why is it important?
Our chapter examines the historical and ongoing influences of political and economic power on Chile's foreign language teaching policies. In so doing, it reveals the underlying forces shaping language education and advocates for a shift away from colonial and hegemonic practices. This work is essential for promoting more equitable and culturally responsive approaches to language instruction, which can have broader implications for educational reform and social justice in Chile and beyond.
Perspectives
It was a great pleasure to write this chapter alongside a colleague with whom I have enjoyed longstanding collaborations. This chapter aims to encourage readers to think more critically about foreign language education, uncovering the less obvious influences that shape it. It also advocates for a framework that empowers foreign language teachers to adopt a more just and equitable approach to their teaching practices.
