What is it about?
After the idea of a responsibility of states to protect people from specific crimes was agreed upon in the UN people like Kofi Anan tried to see how the words on paper could be turned into actions on the ground. This article concentrates on what happened in the UN and how countries and people tried to apply the new idea during the years from 2005-2011.

Why is it important?
It looks for what is beyond the surface, offering insights into why and how the notion of "responsibility to protect" started to find its way into the UN.
Perspectives
What ends up on paper is not always how something started or what is really intended. Knowing the beginning and what countries wanted before entering into compromises to reach an agreement will always help in understanding why certain actions are taken later in the future. I always find it intriguing to know what happens behind closed doors and writing this article gave me the opportunity to do just that. I hope you enjoy making your own discoveries on how things really unfolded
