What is it about?

The chapter explores, in a synchronic and diachronic perspective, how 'face' is conceptualized in Romanian. The analysis focuses on metaphoric and metonymic uses of the 'face' lexemes as revealed by idiomatic expressions concerning social interaction and its effects.

Why is it important?

The conceptualization of 'face' in Romanian indicates: (a) the participants’ cognitive appraisals of the ongoing interaction and its aftermath; (b) that the interactional effects – anticipated or felt – of social interactions on a person are construed both in self- and other-monitoring stances.

Perspectives

I hope my research draws attention to Romanian linguaculture.
