Many resources on conducting a systematic review address the topic in dry terms, ignoring the experiential component of this research method. We describe in detail the "how," the "why", and the "things we wish we knew" about a systematic review.

Why is it important?

Systematic reviews are a methodology that spawned from medical research circles, but are growing in popularity in other fields. They contain some assumptions from medical research, such as reporting of data and alignment of research questions and terminology, that may not be consistent with these other fields.

Perspectives

I was delighted to have this chapter accepted into this handbook volume! Too often, the experiential component of research for researchers is an overlooked topic of discussion.
