What is it about?

This chapter relates how the study, “Container of the uncontainable: In dialogue with women about pregnancy in the 21st century” began, and the various paths of inquiry pursued during this artistic research process. Through interviews with women from different cultural and religious backgrounds, the researcher investigates how the effects of patriarchy influence the way women envision and experience being pregnant, using the concept of a vessel or container as metaphor for a woman’s body.

Why is it important?

The study listens to women as experts of an embodied experience, as they find ways through creative mediums to describe tacit experiences and deconstruct unconscious biases, with new insights gained that can disrupt established assumptions.

Perspectives

At the close of nearly every interview, women expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have an outlet to discuss and process experiences that they had in many cases suppressed or left unacknowledged. These reactions emphasize the need for community networks supporting women in disseminating knowledge and promoting healing.
