Why is it important?
This is the first time such a detailed and deeply informative work has appeared in any Western language. It is written for both specialists and simply interested readers.
Perspectives
Although Brill contacted me individually to create these notes on the books, I am merely one of a large group of contributors, six of whom are among the best scholars of Nō and Kyōgen in the world today. Both dramatic forms are increasingly staged outside of Japan now, but English language resources on their many fascinations have been balkanized into books on texts, books on costumes, books on history, etc. Here at last one can go to learn about all the wonders of Nō and Kyōgen with ease and convenience.
