What is it about?

Inclusive education is about more than placing students with different abilities and needs in the same classroom. It is about creating educational environments in which every learner can participate, develop, feel valued, and access meaningful learning opportunities. The Space of Inclusive Education: Voices from Ukraine and Beyond brings together perspectives on the theory, policy, and practice of inclusion. The book explores how educational systems can recognise human diversity, address barriers to learning and participation, and develop more equitable approaches to education. My introductory chapter sets the scene for this international collection, highlighting the importance of understanding inclusion as a shared educational and social responsibility. Bringing together voices from Ukraine and other contexts, the volume invites readers to reflect on how inclusive education can be developed in different settings and how educational communities can make inclusion a meaningful reality.

Why is it important?

Every learner deserves the opportunity to participate in education and to be recognised as a valued member of their learning community. Yet barriers related to disability, educational practices, institutional arrangements, and social attitudes can prevent students from fully participating. Understanding inclusive education as a broader educational and social process helps shift attention from the perceived limitations of individual learners towards the barriers that educational systems and communities can address. The book contributes to this discussion by bringing together perspectives on inclusive education across theoretical, international, and practical contexts. It is relevant to educators, teacher educators, researchers, and policymakers seeking to understand how more accessible, equitable, and inclusive learning environments can be developed.

Perspectives

Voices from Ukraine and beyond Inclusive education is a global concern, but its implementation is shaped by local histories, educational policies, cultural contexts, and lived experiences. This volume brings Ukrainian perspectives into an international conversation about inclusive education. It connects theoretical discussions with international experience and practical approaches to building inclusive learning environments. The book encourages readers to consider inclusion not simply as a policy requirement or a specialised intervention, but as an ongoing commitment to diversity, participation, accessibility, and educational opportunity.
