What is it about?
Since June 2022, climate activists have been targeting renowned museums and galleries with protests that involve the apparent destruction of artworks, prompting widespread criticsm. We argue that these protests make a link between climate and ecological destruction and the protection of common heritage in ways that may trigger powerful psychological defense mechanisms. We also make the case for why activists use public spaces for protest, and highlight the risks of demarcating museums and galleries as "off-limits" for political action.
