What is it about?

Unlike my scholarly publications, in this one I attempted, at the invitation of the Journal's editors, to give an account of my childhood reminiscences of the city of Baku which between the 1970s and the 1980 still possessed a conspicuous Armenian-speaking population.

Why is it important?

After the massacres of Armenians in three large cities of Azerbaijan (Sumgait: February 1988; Gǝncǝ: November 1988; Baku: January 1990), no Armenians have remained on the territories controlled by Azerbaijan, whilst Armenian monuments have systematically been destroyed. The Armenian communities of Azerbaijan had ancient history, had contributed to the culture of Azerbaijan (notably, to its architecture) but are largely ignored in the West.

Perspectives

In perspective I would see the collection of surviving witnesses about the Armenian life and cultural heritage in Azerbaijan, which would give way to a comprehensive research of the history and architecture of the Armenians in Azerbaijan.
