What is it about?

This paper shows why Beauvoir relies on a deliberate confusion between characters and people in the examples she provides in The Second Sex. Literary figures and actual people are put on the same plane, because reading and emulating characters can actually change women's life. The Second Sex not only operates on a philosophical level, but also like a novel, playing on the readers' emotions in order to shock them into revolt and action.
