Textual Criticism, Translation Studies, and Symmachus’s Version in the Book of Job

What is it about?

Freedom in translational style and usefulness for textual criticism are often at odds. A free Greek rendering that survives only in short fragments (Symmachus), to a notoriously difficult poetic work (Hebrew Job), presents particular challenges to the textual critic trying to trace back the form of the original wording of the source text. This article argues that despite the difficulties, the version of Symmachus may nevertheless yield valuable insights into the Hebrew text of Job in the late second century CE.
