What is it about?

Deep Data is the opposite of Big Data and the most common type of data in the humanities. The article describes an example of such data and explains how it can be used in the humanities.

Why is it important?

If you work in humanities it is highly likely that you are working with Deep Data. No need to be envious of the Big Data, here is how you can use it for machine learning and similar.

Perspectives

This article has broader implications that are rele- vant not only to archaeology, but also to digital humanities in general. We have introduced the concept of Deep Data. Although this concept is by no means new, it has not been used in archaeology or, to our knowledge, in the digital humanities. By use, we mean that the concept is integrated into all phases of research, from funding and data collection to analysis and publication. Deep Data approach can produce many different rich and dense stories and create narratives about the data itself because it is less intentional and more intuitive.
