What is it about?

This introduction opens the Special Issue: Freedom from Below, which I edited for the Journal of Global Slavery. The central idea is to trigger research and discussion on the ways freedom looks like from the perspective of the enslaved, yesterday and today.

Why is it important?

Mainstream discussions on freedom have so far overlooked the contribution of slavery studies. It is time to fill this gap by exploring the cultural and social meanings of freedom in light of slavery.
