What is it about?
This article examines trends of religious disaffiliation from a sociological and psychological perspective to better understand why young adults are leaving Christian religions. It then proposes the practice of theological reflection (examining one's experience through the lens of religious teachings) as a method that could help those involved in the faith formation of adolescents to encourage religious commitment, rather than disaffiliation. With consideration of the psychological patterns related to disaffiliation, I demonstrate ways that theological reflection can foster a Christian identity in students that has an enduring impact on the lives of adolescents and young adults.
