What is it about?
The main purpose of this review article is to search for recent information on the endemic bird species of Ethiopia their distribution conservation challenges and conservation mechanism. The recent data show that Ethiopia has 19 species of bird that are found only in Ethiopia. Some are distributed in different regions of Ethiopia (Yellow-fronted Parrot, Abyssinian Longclaw, Wattled Ibis, Blue-winged Goose, and Abyssinian Catbird) but some species are restricted to a few regions of Ethiopia (Red-billed Pytilia, Yellow-throated Serin, Salvadori's Serin, Black-fronted francolin). The assemblages of endemic birds diminish from time to time due to different conservation challenges. The major conservation challenges of the bird species in different areas were habitat disturbances by overgrazing and agricultural expansion around habitats. Agricultural land expansion is the most dominant driver for habitat loss, which, combined with unsustainable forest management, contributes to the greatest cause of species moving closer. Hunting for egg collection and hunting for food and their meat is prized both for its flavor and supposed medicinal properties are challenges for those species. Habitat restoration, Establishing new conservation areas and protection, and awareness creation developing a sense of ownership is conservation mechanisms for endemic birds in Ethiopia.
