What is it about?
This article examines the etymology of the word "haliq," an alternative word for the haroset (a sweet and sour dipping sauce made from fruit and nuts used on Passover). I argue that the word haliq comes via Aramaic from the Latin allec, referring to a fermented fish sauce. I conclude with a survey of how haliq and words derived from it were maintained as a term for haroset in Jewish languages around the world from the Middle Ages until the present day.
