Why is it important?
The common cliche, "Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere" closes conversations and minds due to assumptions and stereotypes about poverty. Although Michel-Rolph Trouillot left us ten years ago, his ideas and writing demonstrate how deceptive cliches, assumptions, and stereotypes about Haiti can be.
Perspectives
Reviewing the translation of Professor Trouillot's first book was challenging because we were friends and because he fashioned a multifaceted story. People should read the book if they are eager to learn more about Haitian history than most media accounts and too many scholarly works permit.
