What is it about?

This article has two main goals. First, to identify and discuss a unique causative suffix in certain dialects of the Caspian language Gilaki, and related forms in nearby languages Tati & Talyshi. The second goal is to explain where this suffix comes from; we believe that it is connected to a suffix reconstructable for Proto Eastern Iranian, *-a:waya-, as well as the elusive -(a:)paya- causative suffix in Sanskrit.
