What is it about?

This article elaborates on the theological, philosophical and pedagogical foundations that theoretically frame Islamic education in its various forms. First, it highlights the foundations of Islamic education in Islamic normative tradition and classical Muslim theological thought. Discussion of the philosophy and pedagogy of Islamic Education focuses on its fundamental features (specific educational goals, critical/reflective, transformative, integrative, dialogical approach, etc.). Following many initiatives and needs for authentic and independent Islamic education across Europe, this article advocates that the theological, philosophical and pedagogical framework of Islamic Education should autonomously shape Islamic educational programs in Europe and has the potential to fit in European educational settings. It is a privilege to share that the achievements of the intellectual history of Islam may also be of interest within the paradigms of contemporary liberal democracies, with their promotion of logical thinking, scientific response to individual and social needs, and pluralism. On the other hand, the formation of the Islamic pedagogical tradition also indicates the further need of Islamic education to be open and integrated with contemporary Western pedagogical theories and effective practices that are aligned with the broader Islamic worldview.
