What is it about?
The Ribāṭ of Safi, founded by Abū Muḥammad Ṣāliḥ (d. 631/1233), is one of the most important and ancient Maghrebi ribāṭs. Its influence went beyond its homeland and reached the East thanks to the emergence of the ṭarīqa al-mājariyya, which established the accomplishment of Hajj as a mandatory practice for those who followed this path._x000D_ _x000D_ For this reason, this paper focuses on the study of the historical evolution of ribāṭ Safi and how its leaders institutionalized the practice of Hajj in a period characterized by a lack of security by creating a caravan of pilgrims (rakb al-ḥujjāj) that followed a route with diverse staging points along the way.
