What is it about?

This co-authored article has been written to demystify the success of Richard Osman's debut novel, "The Thursday Murder Club". Through interviews with Osman himself as well as his literary agent and his editorial and marketing teams at Penguin Random House, we tell the story of how the novel was written and published to such vast international success in 2020.

This study offers a rare window into the creative and publishing processes behind a recent cultural phenomenon: the launch of a new fiction author who looks set to dominate bestseller lists for years to come.

Perspectives

This was a fascinating article for us to research and write together. Both of us having worked in the publishing industry (in editorial and publicity roles respectively), we saw this as a chance to explore in detail how this one celebrity novel, expected to sell well, ended up massively outperforming everybody's predictions.
