The principle of the possibility of the nobler is one of the most important principles in later Islamic philosophy. It says that if there are two things that differ in nobility the nobler one must exist before the baser one. It proves, among other thing, the existence of immaterial intellects. The paper examines the historical origins of this principle which go back to Plotinus.
