What is it about?

By tracking the history of four çiftliks of Larissa during the Ottoman period, this paper tries to underline the role of imperial authorities in the history of çiftliks and its impact on the agricultural market. It also dealt with the tricky issues of imperial terminology of property rights before the Tanzimat Era.

Why is it important?

It brings a fresh approach by studying the history of very limited number of agricultural establishments from the 16th to the late 19th century. It also rejects the idea of rise and existence of çiftliks as a development completely beyond state control, and studies the crucial role of the mechanisms of confiscation and tax-farming in çiftlik markets.
