What is it about?

This paper examines Larry A. Hickman's warnings about social media technologies and the loss of privacy that they have caused, as well as the threats to democracy that unchecked algorithmic powers bring. Hickman and I each draw on John Dewey's work to show what the great philosopher can still teach us today, both about the nature and value of technology and about how to think about education and culture needed to support the demands of democracy and against threats to it.
