What is it about?

Many American citizens, especially non-elites, have lost confidence in liberals, historiography and the possibility for transformative public dialogue. They are suspicious of figures that value literature, skepticism and narrative more than objective ethical values. This essay presents a way to make sense of how non-elites and non-intellectuals can understand what it might mean to see a reflection of themselves in a misunderstood ethical tradition. Cornel West's reflection and account of a misunderstood ethical tradition offers insight into how non-intellectuals and non-elites might have confidence in an ethical tradition whose problems need transparency and criticism not wholesale rejection.
