This paper adds to the literature on European secularization by showing a recent increase in the neither religious nor spiritual in northern Europe and a decline in supernatural beliefs among those who identify as spiritual. Furthermore, many atheists and agnostics who are spiritual hold interpretations of spirituality that are secular in substance, emphasizing the limitations of using “spirituality” as evidence of enduring religiosity.
