What is it about?
The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part, the paper examines the scholarly debate surrounding Schopenhauer's use of the Platonic Ideas. In the second part, the problem of the 'cognitive' place of the Ideas is examined relative to Schopenhauer's account of Genius and aesthetic contemplation. The relationship between abstraction and intuition, concept and Idea, and the role of imagination and 'normal intuitions' are examined. The cognitive process is interpreted as a semiotic "circle of signification". Finally, a number of difficulties are identified and discussed.
