What is it about?
The world of diplomacy is evolving. In addition to traditional diplomacy between states, developments such as globalisation, multilateralism and technology create a need for diplomacy to diversify. Whereas researchers debate on these developments and how to label them, practitioners have started to use new terms to describe the kind of diplomacy they engage in. One of these emerged terms is humanitarian diplomacy._x000D_ _x000D_ Humanitarian diplomacy, in short, can be described as advancing humanitarian interests by diplomatic means among official and non-official actors. This article looks at humanitarian diplomatic practices, which define how humanitarian diplomacy manifests in practice. Not only these practices explain what humanitarian diplomacy means today, but they also shape this diplomatic category in the future.

Understanding humanitarian diplomacy is important as it plays a central role both in humanitarian disaster prevention and risk mitigation during an emergency. It also helps to navigate the complex, political landscape that humanitarians operate in.
Perspectives
Humanitarian diplomacy is an underexplored concept in academia and at times, not fully understood by practitioners. This publication is one of the rare ones shedding light on the term, and helping both scholars and practitioners in understanding the practices that compose humanitarian diplomacy.
