What is it about?

"The Crisis of Democratization in the Greater Horn of Africa," edited by Kidane Mengisteab in 2020, explores challenges to democracy in the Greater Horn of Africa region. It argues that the traditional focus on elections hasn't effectively promoted democracy. Instead, reforms often serve to legitimize the elites in power. Economic and institutional fragmentation hinders participation. Case studies from Eritrea, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Sudan show how power concentration obstructs democracy. The book suggests the need for fundamental changes in institutions and structures. It also examines Somaliland's unique hybrid governance model, which has made progress despite lacking international recognition. Overall, the book calls for addressing power dynamics, economic issues, and the inclusion of marginalized groups to achieve a more inclusive and democratic future in the region.
