What is it about?
The Life of St.Nephon, written in the 2nd half of the 10th century, is the most underestimated piece of Byzantine hagiography. It could become accessible to Symeon the New Theologian, the famous mystic, very soon after his conversion to spiritual life. The peculiar combination of ecstatic confessions of abominable sins and the simultaneous confidence in being the God's chosen one, seeing God with physical eyes, characteristic of the Life of Nephon, influenced Symeon and became the main style of self-representation in his writings.
