What is it about?
The article, written with Elham Fakhro, introduces constitutionalism in the Arab Gulf issue of Abhath, the main chapters, together with historical and comparative perspectives. It also includes original work on the concept of elections, and some history constructed in circles

Why is it important?
Some of the article is introductory and invites the reader to go in depth with the chapters in the journal issue. The final section is particularly novel. It discovers the concept of istihama as the earliest prototype for 'election by shares' in the Islamic tradition
Perspectives
The chapters in the Issue are all new, insofar as there is little scholarship in the field. Some build on archives and case-law. Most are authored by young women and men from the region.
