What is it about?

It is impossible to speak about empowerment without the religious sentiments that govern people's lives. I demonstrate that Christian widows in northern Nigeria can be empowered to effect change if development initiatives allow them to draw from their faith.

Why is it important?

As I argue in another article, due to persistent violence in Nigeria, widows are becoming central to life in the country. By refusing to remarry to raise their children, they are shaping the next generation of Nigerian leaders alone. Therefore, much of the world is going to be influenced - either directly from the widows or through the children they are raising - by the principles that guide the lives of widows.

Perspectives

What this publication provides is a lens into the lives of widows in northern Nigeria. It portrays the potency of faith amidst suffering. The faith of widows gives meaning to their sufferings. And any development that helps them draw upon their faith to address their challenges gives them the best chance for personal and societal transformation.
