What is it about?

The integration of human rights education (HRE) into the school curriculum seems to have a positive effect on children's school routine. The present study sought to implement a short-term school-based human HRE pilot programme in Greek students aged 9 to 12 years and to test its effectiveness in enhancing human rights awareness and school adjustment.

Why is it important?

Although short-term, HRE proved to be effective in strengthening school adjustment. The results showed a significant improvement of the study participants in human rights awareness, school engagement, academic self-concept, perceptions of the school environment, empathy, school liking, school avoidance, and loneliness. The present findings are important as the impact of HRE programmes on perceptions of the school environment, empathy, school liking, school avoidance, and loneliness have not been previously investigated.

Perspectives

The importance of learning and practicing human rights is essential to creating a culture of freedom, justice, equality and respect. These principles seem to positively influence children's school routine, creating a supportive environment for personal and educational growth. We hope that the article will be an inspiration to educators around the world, as well as to all those who work with children or are involved in the formation of education policy.
