What is it about?

This study looks at the ongoing ethnic violence and displacement faced by the Amhara people in Ethiopia. For centuries, the Amhara have played an important role in building the Ethiopian state. However, since 1991, a harmful narrative has emerged, painting the Amhara as historical oppressors and blaming them for past wrongs. This has led to targeted violence, especially after political changes in 2018, with increased attacks by other ethnic groups such as the Tigrayan, Oromo, and Gumuz. These groups have been influenced by Ethiopia's ethnic-based federal system, which has made tensions worse.
