What is it about?
This article discusses the history of the first fifty years of the Society for Pentecostal Studies. It also discusses five "schools" of Pentecostal identity and three theories of Pentecostal origins.

Why is it important?
According to leading religious demographers, Pentecostals, Charismatics, and neo-Charismatics (after Catholics) now constitute the second largest category of Christians in the world. The Society for Pentecostal Studies is the leading academic society discussing the history of and ongoing concerns within the Pentecostal, Charismatic, and neo-Charismatic movements.
Perspectives
I believe this article will be widely recognized as an important and authentic discussion of the history of the SPS. I also hope it will serve as a platform for continuing the important work of the SPS into the future.
