What is it about?

In Transmitting the Spirit in Missions: The History and Growth of the Church of Pentecost, Amos Jimmy Markin has produced an extensive resource that comprises a historical and theological analysis of the growth and mission of the Church of Pentecost (CoP). The thesis of this book is that, the Holy Spirit is the nexus of the emergence, growth, expansion and sustaining power of the CoP’s mission, both in Ghana and in the diaspora. The author contends that besides other religious, missiological and theological factors, the experience and transformative power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of individual adherents and the corporate church is the major factor, promoting the growth of the CoP (pp. 242-43, 272, 280-81).

Why is it important?

Dr Jimmy Markin has scratched where African Pentecostalism is itching by revealing in this book that, as typified by the mission of the CoP, contemporary Pentecostalism has moved beyond translating the message into transmitting the Spirit in its local and global missionary endeavours (272). I, therefore, find Transmitting the Spirit in Missions remarkably timely and recommend it for all who are interested in knowing the secret behind the growth and sustaining power of the Pentecostal movement in Africa and beyond.

Perspectives

The important role of the Holy Spirit among Pentecostals (especially in Africa) must be given attention by both scholars and church leaders in contemporary times.
